Raphaella Smits is internationally praised as an inspiring teacher of both guitar and chamber music. Committed to music education, she holds a position as chair at the Lemmens Institute in Belgium, and regularly gives master classes throughout Europe, North and South America, and in Japan. Best known for her performances of historic repertoire on the eight-string guitar, Smits was the first woman to win the first prize of the 1986 XX Certaman Internacional de Guitarra Francisco Tarrega in Spain. In addition to performing concerts on nearly every continent, Smits has made 5 LP’s and 12 CD’s for Accent Records, all of which have been met with critical acclaim.
