“His greatness, his overwhelming authority as musician, technician, and probing intellect emerges quickly as he plays.” – Los Angeles Times
Seven-time Grammy Award winner Emanuel Ax is one of the most highly-sought pianists performing today. He is a frequent and favorite presence among Chicago audiences, and performs regularly with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic, among others. This season his ongoing partnership with the Boston Symphony Orchestra includes visits with the orchestra to Montreal, Toronto, and Carnegie Hall. Ax is a committed exponent of contemporary composers, with works written for him by John Adams, Christopher Rouse, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bright Sheng, and Melinda Wagner already in his repertoire. A Sony Classical exclusive recording artist since 1987, Ax has garnered numerous accolades for his various solo and chamber recordings, including a series of Grammy-winning recordings with cellist Yo-Yo Ma. This concert takes place during his first residency period with the Bienen School of Music as winner of the 2016 Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance.
